Mentorship Program for Youth Leaders in Environment Conservation


Program Description

India faces several environmental challenges. There is an urgent need to act in relation to environmental awareness and stewardship across the stakeholder spectrum. The U.S. Consulate General, Mumbai (USCG-M) and the Ekonnect Knowledge Foundation (Ekonnect) have partnered to develop a six-month youth leadership program which matches environmental experts (mentors) with young leaders (mentees) to bring to life scalable, replicable and innovative solutions that address environmental challenges.

Program Objectives

  • Educate young leaders on entrepreneurial and problem-solving skills in relation to environmental sustainability
  • Catalyze the conception of innovative sustainable solutions that address India’s pressing challenges in relation to natural resource stewardship as well as air, water and other pollution


  • Individuals must be between the ages of 20-35
  • Individuals must be affiliated with institutions that are Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) registered
  • Project concepts must be within one or more of the five categories:
    • Water Management
    • Air Quality Monitoring & Control
    • Organic Solid Waste Management (e.g. composting, biogas generation)
    • Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency
    • Plastic Waste Management
  • Projects must take place in one or more of the following states:
    • Chhattisgarh
    • Goa
    • Gujarat
    • Madhya Pradesh
    • Maharashtra

Program Structure

  • The program is for six months, from February 2019 until July 2019
  • Selected mentees will be grouped (based on similar themes) into teams of three and matched with a mentor
  • Mentor-mentee teams will be required to attend an opening ceremony (February 2019), and three workshops (February, March and April 2019) during which mentees will develop skills in leadership and environmental sustainability. Project concepts will be developed for implementation over these three months
  • Mentee teams will pitch project concepts at a pitching session/closing ceremony in May 2019 where three teams will be selected to receive $3,000 (~Rs. 2.15 lakhs) each to implement the project over a three-month period (May, June and July 2019)
  • All events will take place at the U.S. Consulate General, Mumbai
